Edward Bunting (collector) employed to note down songs - this became very important as it was one of the first times that the music was written down rather than handed down from generation to generation by ear - also gave notes on tunes techniques and traditions.
The Belfast Harp Festival was organised in 1792 to prevent the harping tradition from dying out. Edward Bunting was a 19-year-old organist when he was employed at the harp festival to notate the tunes played by the harpers. He travelled around the country collecting tunes, dances and airs for publication.
